Mission failed: Blackened silver

A few weeks ago, while cleaning my house. I found some old silver jewelry. The silver is a bit blackened, but I still really would like to use it in combination with the beeswax.

I know you can buy silver polish for silver jewelry, but I didn't wanna spend any money on it directly. So I called my mum and asked for some help. 'Cause mums always know things like that.

She had an idea with a plastic tray, aluminum foil, salt and hot water. I had to put the aluminum foil in the tray, with the jewelry on it, put some salt on it and fill the tray with hot water.

She didn't tell me how long I had to wait till I had to get the jewelry out. So I let in it the water for about 24 hours. Maybe, that was a little bit to enthusiastic.

After the 24 hours my jewelry was still blackened. (Thanks mum) And my aluminum foil was affected. I was kind of shocked by the effect of the salt on the aluminum foil.

So I really don't recommend my mums tip and I'll buy some silver polish.

Mission failed: Washing-up bowl

After my last experiment with beeswax I almost gave up with it. But I had a lot of the product left and I don’t like trowing things away that could be useful someday. The idea of the next experiment was to shape the stuff in to a form. Therefore I had to dip it in to something that didn’t fit in to my saucepan. So I took my washing-up bowl, threw the wax in to it and started dipping my new form in the wax.

The wax in my last experiment didn’t stuck in to my sausepan. In my plastic washing-up bowl it was completely different. I tried to get it out of the bowl, but soon it proved that it was pretty pointless. The photo’s of the inside  became pretty cool. But doing the washing up in it again, doesn’t seen very hygienic. The only option was to gave up again and buy a new washing-up bowl.

Mission failed: Living green

Besides the experiments for me as a product designer, I’m also trying to reflect myself into my apartment. My apartment is simple, small and white. A lot of white as you may’ll see in the series of textures. I would like to see a bit more color in my interior.

As a designer, I do a lot of experiments. On this blog, I show you the results of my experiments. Not all of them, only the  failed ones. On the internet we can find successful experiments everywhere. You can’t do only successful experiments. Then, doing experiments and research wouldn’t be so interesting. I like my failures and I would like to share them with you.

This experiment was for my apartment. I love fresh herbs and vegetables. The problem is, I don’t have a garden, not even a balcony. So the fresh vegetables, I have buy on the market. The herbs, I tough, should be possible to let grow inside the house. So, I bought some small planters and some herbs.

My basil plant is doing it well for weeks already. That makes me really proud. My current chives is doing pretty good,  after I had the last one drowned.  My parsley plants do not grow very well. They are just not as green as they should be. When I threw the last one away, I was pretty confident for the new one. After a few days it started to look like…uhm.. just take a look at the photos.

Meanwhile, I know the cause of the problem. A parsley plant needs to stand in a big planter, in the shadow. My planter is really small, because I had the idea of placing the herbs in my windowsill, behind my window in the full sun during the day. So… that should be the second reason of my sad looking parsley.

So today’s lesson: First google a plant, before you place them somewhere inside or outside.
Thanks for reading about my almost dead parsley.

Mission failed: Cooking with beeswax

In a mission of making a fruit bowl I’m experimenting with different waxes and resins.  I mix everything, every time in different combinations. I warm it up until it melts and then I try to shape it in a form. Just in my own kitchen.
I started with different waxes, especially beeswax. Most waxes does have a naturally yellow color. I made it black with iron oxide. It’s a horrible pigment, my whole kitchen turned black. Including, my closes, my hair, my shoes and everything else in my kitchen.

After pouring some malls, I got frustrated by everything being black so I decided to quit. There was some wax left in my little saucepan, but I was to frustrated to clean it.

The next morning, my kitchen was still black. But in my saucepan I saw something really pretty.

The question is now, what the can I do with it?

Mission failed: knitting

As a designer, I do a lot of experiments. I also really enjoy doing it. On this blog, I show you the results of my experiments. Not all of them, only the  failed ones. On the internet we can find successful experiments everywhere. You can’t do only successful experiments. Then, doing experiments and research wouldn’t be so interesting. I like my failures and I would like to share them with you.

One of my failures was the idea of start knitting. I had an idea of a lamp with a knit. So, I bought knitting needles and wool.  I read some things about it and decided to watch some youtube-tutorials. It could not be that hard, right?

Actually, it was hard. For me at least. After about an hour and a half I got so frustrated… Every almost blind grandma can knit whole sweater in a few days, without youtube! And I can’t even knit the most simple knit stitch. The whole idea of start knitting made me so sad.

See the result of TWO evenings and a lot of frustrations. It’s okay, you may laugh.
